The Numerology Alphabet: Quick Reference

Two primary systems assign numerical values to letters — Pythagorean (Western, sequential) and Chaldean (Babylonian, vibrational). Both are shown in the table below so you can work with either system.

Pythagorean System

3 = C L U    4 = D M V
5 = E N W    6 = F O X
7 = G P Y    8 = H Q Z
9 = I R

Chaldean System

1 = A I J Q Y   2 = B K R
3 = C G L S   4 = D M T
5 = E H N X   6 = U V W

How to Use the Numerology Alphabet

Step 1 — Choose Your System

For Western name numerology (Expression Number, Soul Urge, Personality Number), use the Pythagorean values. For name analysis in the Indian or Chaldean tradition, use the Chaldean values. If you want a complete picture, calculate both — they often differ and each reveals a different layer.

Step 2 — Assign Values to Each Letter

Write out the full name you want to calculate. Below each letter, write its numerical value from the chart above. Use your full birth name exactly as it appears on your birth certificate for the Expression Number — not a nickname or married name.

Step 3 — Add and Reduce

Add all the values together. If the total is more than one digit, add those digits together and repeat until you reach a single digit — or a Master Number (11, 22, or 33). Do not reduce Master Numbers further.

Example — MICHAEL:
M(4) + I(9) + C(3) + H(8) + A(1) + E(5) + L(3) = 33  →  Master Number 33 — do not reduce.
Chaldean: M(4) + I(1) + C(3) + H(5) + A(1) + E(5) + L(3) = 22  →  Master Number 22.

What the Numbers Mean in Name Numerology

Expression Number (all letters): Your natural talents, abilities, and the mode through which you most naturally create value in the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

What number does each letter of the alphabet have in numerology?+

In Pythagorean numerology: A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, I=9, J=1, K=2, L=3, M=4, N=5, O=6, P=7, Q=8, R=9, S=1, T=2, U=3, V=4, W=5, X=6, Y=7, Z=8. Letters cycle through 1-9 sequentially. In Chaldean numerology the values are different and based on vibrational frequency rather than sequential order.

How do I calculate my name using the numerology alphabet?+

Find each letter of your name in the numerology alphabet chart and note its value. Add all values together and reduce to a single digit by adding the digits of the total. For example: JOHN = J(1)+O(6)+H(8)+N(5) = 20 = 2+0 = 2. The result is your Expression Number.

What is the difference between Pythagorean and Chaldean alphabet values?+

Pythagorean assigns letters sequentially: A=1, B=2, C=3 cycling through 1-9. Chaldean assigns values based on vibrational frequency and only uses 1-8, treating 9 as sacred. The same letter can have different values in each system. For example, F=6 in Pythagorean but F=8 in Chaldean.

Which numerology alphabet system should I use?+

Pythagorean is most widely used in Western numerology and is the standard for calculating Expression, Soul Urge, and Personality numbers. Chaldean is the older system, dominant in India, and considered more karmically precise for name analysis. Many professional numerologists calculate both and use them as complementary layers.

What is A in numerology?+

In Pythagorean numerology, A=1. In Chaldean numerology, A=1 as well. Both systems assign A the value of 1, making it the letter of leadership, originality, and new beginnings. A name beginning with A projects authority and independence in numerological analysis.
